GIRLS BASKETBALL
PLAYER TO WATCH
Despite its 1-5 start, Elizabeth has received a solid effort this year from junior guard Jatirah Diggs.
Diggs has scored in double-figures in all six games this season and takes a 16.2 average into today's home game against Gov. Livingston at 4 p.m.
She had a career-high 25 points along with four assists and four steals in a 58-28 victory over Carteret on Dec. 30.
Diggs' previous high was a 23-point effort against Benedictine when she played for St. Patrick as a freshman. Diggs transferred to Elizabeth last year, averaging 11.3 points for a team that finished 2-19.
TEAM TO WATCH
After a 1-2 start, Cranford has reeled off four straight victories to take a 5-2 record into today's 5:45 p.m. game at Holmdel.
Cranford lost to Oak Knoll and New Providence and then rebounded to defeat Livingston and West Orange to claim the West Orange Tournament and then defeated Johnson and Union Catholic at home.
Cranford, which won the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 sectional title last year, has been fueled by Jessica McCoy (9.9 ppg.), Morgan Miller (9.0 ppg.), Kaitlyn McGovern (5.4 ppg.) and Jenna Goeller (4.6 ppg.).
Cranford, under the direction of fourth-year head coach Jackie Dyer, is home to Linden Friday at 4 p.m.
GAME TO WATCH
Johnson (4-2) will be the host to New Providence (4-1) in a key Union County Conference-Mountain Division game tomorrow in Clark at 7 p.m.
In the only meeting between the schools last year, Johnson edged New Providence, 35-34, in a Union County Tournament first-round game. Kate Matthews' basket with 12 seconds left in the fourth quarter erased a 34-33 deficit for Johnson.
Matthews (14.3 ppg.), Kristy Pflug (11.3 ppg.), Cyndi Wilson (8.2 ppg.) and Michelle Smorol (6.0 ppg.) have paced the offense for Johnson so far this winter. New Providence, which won the overall Group 1 state title last season, has been led by Laura Gregory (12.4 ppg.), Cassandra Squeri (13.0 ppg.), Kaitlyn Cresencia (6.2 ppg.) and Emma Cullenton (6.2 ppg.).
